Trip of Molokan-Jumper representatives to the state of Mississippi
    Редакцию «Новый Зари» посетил И. И. Еднов, который сообщил, что ему по телефону звонил Я. В. Косырёв из Лос Анжелоса, сообщивший, что группа ходоков молокан-пригунов выехала в штат Миссиссиппи в связи с планом о переселеним туда из Калифорнии, Аризоны, Невады и других западных штатов.
      The publisher of "New Dawn" was visited by I. I. Ednov [?John John Ednoff, San Francisco] who reported that Ia.V. Kosyryov [?Jack Wm. Kosareff, Kasareff] phoned him from Los Angeles announcing that a group of representatives of Molokan- Jumpers went to the state of Mississippi in connection with a plan about resettling there from California, Arizona, Nevada and other western states.
    Я. В. Косырёв сообшил, что ходоки — его сын и племяник Косырёвы с Н. Н. Хомутовым и М. Н. Григорьевым выехали в Миссиссиппи на одном автомобиле и теперь они должных уже быть на местах. Они проживут там несколько месяцев, осматривая и изучая район, намеченный для переселения молокан-прыгунов. Они там будут сеять и изучать, что и как родится из злаков и в каком количестве. Они будут изучать климат и местные условия.     Ia.V. Kosyryov reports that representatives — his son and Kosyryov nephews, with N. N. Khomutov [?Nick Nick Homutoff] and M. N. Grigoryev [?Mike Nick Gregoroff, Leon's brother.] — left for Mississippi by automobile and they should already be there by now. They will live there for several months, examining and studying the area planned for a resettlement of Molokan-Jumpers. They will plant grains [wheat, rye, or grass] there and study how they grow and in what quantity. They will be studying the climate and local conditions. [If readers can identify any of these representatives, please respond here.]  An unamed e-mail reports: My uncle Jack Kosareff went, and Lavon/Levon/Leon Naum/Naomich Gregoroff went later. They were trying to be land speculators, about 100 miles out of Las Vegas, Nevada, in Utah but it didn't work. Carp Malofy was a Doukhobor who joined the Molokans. The Kaseroff and Gregoroff group (Yakof and Lavon) traveled quiet a bit, including to South America in the late 40's. A son of Lavon's used to live in the L.A. area but moved to Lindsay, (Visalia area) in the early 60's.
    И. И. Еднов сообщает, что первая партия ходоков в составе П. П. Колпакова с женой, Я. П. Ледаева и К. Ф. Малафьёва ездила ранее, в штат Миссиссиппи на автомобиле, осмотрела место и вернулась в Лос-Анжслос. Эта партия осталась под неблагоприятным впечатлением от избранного места и сказала: «Мы туда не поедём. Место — лихорадочное».
     I. I. Ednov reports that the first group of representatives consisting of P. P. Kolpakov and his wife [?Pete/Paul Kalpakoff], J. P. Ledaev [? Lidyoff, ] and K. F. Malafyov [Carl Malofy, Bakersfield], went earlier to the state of Mississippi by automobile, examined a place and returned to Los Angeles. This group sustained an adverse [bad] impression about their selected place and said: "We won't go there. The place is feverish."
    Избранное место тянется на 50 миль в длину вдоль берега Миссиссиппи и вглубь местами до 15 миль... Вдоль берегов тянутся высокие «завалы» из цемента от наводнений. Тем не менее, на земле много болот, которые не высыхают и которые образуются из подпочвенной влаги.
     The selected place stretches along 50 miles of the coast of Mississippi and up to 15 miles deep in places ... Along the coast high cement "blockades" are piled up for floods. None the less, on the ground there are a lot of bogs [swamps] which do not dry up, which are formed from underground moisture.
    Масса больших комаров и местность малярийная.  Негры — очень тощие. Когда молокане стали с ними здороваться за руку, они боялись и отказывались жать руки... Негры там еще на старом положении, они даже ходят по отдельной стороне улицы в городах.
     There are a lot of big mosquitoes and local malaria. The Negros [Blacks] are very skinny [emaciated]. When the Molokans offered to shake hands with them, they were afraid and refused to shake [squeeze] hands... Negros [Blacks] also have an old status there, they must walk on separate sides of the streets in the cities.
    Негры говорили молоканам: «Кто вы такие? Зачем вы хотите сюда переселяться? Нам говорили, что Сталин вас послал, чтобы делать здесь огнеприпасы для войны». Молокане отвечали: «Нет, мы — люди мирные и бежим от войны»... Но негры недоверчиво качали головами.
     Negros [Blacks] spoke with the Molokans: "Who are you? Why do you want to move here? They say that Stalin sent you here to make ammunition for war". The Molokans answered: "No we are peaceful people and run from war"... But the Negros [Blacks] mistrustfully shook their heads.
    Вторая группа ходоков от молокан намерена пробыть там подольше и выяснить детально все подробности местной жизни в долине реки Миссиссиппи. По возвращении ходоков И. И. Еднов обещает сообщить результаты их обследования.
     The second group of representatives from the Molokans is going to stay there longer to find out completely the full details of the local life in a Mississippi river valley. After the representatives return, I. I. Ednov promises to report the results of their inspection. [No follow up article appeared.]
