First a citation:

"Spiritual Christians (Molokane) are a variety of Spiritual Christianity. Denominations [branches] were widespread in Central Russia in the second half of the 1700s to the 1800s. There is no single opinion about the origin of the denomination or the name "Molokane". Some historians argue that Molokanism emerged from Dukhobors as a separate denomination in the late 1700s, thanks to Semion Uklein, a tailor, who initially was Orthodox, and then by marrying the daughter of the leader of the Dukhobors, Pobirohin (Pobirahin) left Orthodoxy. Afterward, a severance occurred between Uklein and Pobirohin (Pobirahin). Uklein, broke away with Dukhobors*, and founded his own Molokan denomination. [* taking 70 of the best Dukhobor singers.]
1863.] Others are searching for the roots of Molokane and Dukhobors in the sects which were spreading earlier. Thus, Melnikov-Pechersky* tend to identify Molokane and Dukhobors with Iconobors [icon-wrestlers]. This view of history seems to me more like the right one. [* One of the best-known researchers of the schism. П.И. 1-6, Мoscow 1863. The label Dukhobory was coined in 1785, after Molokane in 1765.]
I think a more reasonable view is that Semion Uklein did not create a new doctrine. It probably existed long before him. But, during a time of rapid development of Molokanism, he was an active participant [associate] and organizer, and this led to the belief that he was it's founder." (citation: Mliochnyi Put' (Milky Way) 1996-1999.)
In the 1830s, a decree of Nicholas I, opened the Caucasian province for the settlement of Spiritual Christians — Molokane, Pryguny, Subbotniki and Dukhobors, including those now located in Turkey, Kars province. My ancestors came from Kars province, as did the ancestors of Vasily Vasilyevich Novikov, the 80-year-old man I interviewed in the village of Fioletovo.
He explained that initially the village was called Nikitino, named after General Nikitin who, by order of the Tsar, escorted Spiritual Christians Molokans to Transcaucasia. He glanced over the uninhabited hills and outlined by hand: "settle here." The second village, Lermontovo, was first called Voskresenovka. The villages were were renamed under Soviet rule, and it is unclear who changed them or why they were changed.
Generally, the Soviet regime in Armenia had warm relations with the Spiritual Christians Molokans. On the hills near the villages a birch grove was planted to remind them of their historical homeland, even though a generation that lived here during Soviet times, was born and grew up without birch trees.

Vasilii Vasil'evich lived mainly in the city along with his large family, and worked as a driver. He came back to the the village when he retired so he could feed his family. At that time there was an earthquake and war followed by an embargo in Armenia. He assured his Armenian friends that even if there will be more earthquakes and wars, the Spiritual Christians Molokans will never leave Armenia, because the Lord Himself sent them there for a specific purpose.
Vasilii Vasil'evich (V.V.) is loved and remembered in the city, and very respected in the village. He is considered a very decent, honest man, hard-working and truthful.
В. We were told that he cuts the hay in his nephew's the garden, because he moved to the city. We can see his tiny body in front of his nephew's gate. His neighbor opened the door and during this short time lavishly praised V.V.
While we were walking with him for quite a distance, V.V. did not lift his head. He seemed concerned about his work and did not look at  anyone around him. But during the interview, he admitted that he thought we were "Americans" (American Spiritual Christians Molokans): "They come here specifically to look at this place, because a long time ago the Postoiannye (Constants) whipped the Spiritual (Dukhovnie, Pryguny) to death."
With all his honesty, V.V. was not devoid of humble peasant cunningness. He noticed everything, saw everything, and when I asked questions which he thought were hard, he would grin under his mustache, squint his eyes, and shake his head, saying hee-hee, you can't fool me!

V.V. explained that the origin of the word "Molokans" was derived from "small quantity" [maloe kolichestvo].
He told us that they recently chose a new presbyter, who is 90 years old. I asked him to describe the procedure for the selection.
Novikov:  Well how? We pray, fast and ask God to pick to the right person.
Photographer: Does the entire congregation pray and fast?
Novikov: Well, not the whole congregation. Some people pray and strictly fast, others simply pray. And then the name would be revealed.
Photographer: How?
Novikov:  Uh-ah. It will be revealed in everyone's heart. How else can the Lord tell us?
Photographer: I'm surprised, I read that Spiritual Christians Molokans don't fast. [During Orthodox fasts, especially Lent.]
Novikov: It depends on how you understand the fast! Do you think that what the Orthodox do is fasting? (In the beginning of our interview, he immediately declared that they are similar to the other Russian Orthodox, but then he opened up.) People must actually fast. In general, there are three types of fasts:
  1. Fast all day, do not eat or drink anything, and pray.
  2. If you can endure, fast for 3 days, don't eat anything, and pray.
  3. And, for the strongest, don't eat anything for a week and pray.
Once I quit smoking. I had such a bad habit. I was already married and had children. It was embarrassing for me to smoke in front of the the kids, and that I could not quit. And then I decided to fast and pray for a week. Either I would die or quit. So I endured it, and after a week I no longer desired to smoke!

athanatoi   Sept 15, 2008
Well ... for the most part they are self-supporting, unlike the Russians in other countries, but many have emigrated, mainly to Russia, and part of Armenia. There are few mixed families, and next year [2010] they will have lived in Lori region for 180 years.

A Beautiful Theme ))

I have personally spoken with many Spiritual Christians Molokans! They are very pleasant, honest and decent people. I know that the local Armenians respect them a lot for their pathological honesty and integrity.

According to my observations, the most common surname among Spiritual Christians Molokans is Novikov!

Who might know? There was a very well-known athlete, martial arts [pentathlete], multiple Olympic and world champion, Igor Novikov? It seems to me that he, too, was from the Armenian community of Spiritual Christians Molokans.

Recently I visited Armenia and often noticed on the streets here such as photos, colorful bearded men, the builders of cities. Those they have what it enlightened.
